Thanks for stopping by to read about how to make a sidebar extend to the entire height of its container.
Due to it’s extreme popularity (this post has been the most popular post on my blog for months!), I have updated and improved the original post and it can now be found here – 2 Ways to Make a Sidebar Extend to the Bottom of Its Container.

Hi Thank you very much for this clear and informative solution. It worked fine for me and has been the last thing I was trying to work out on a site. I found it through a WordPress forum link. I’ll be checking the site out more as i’m just getting into website creation.
Hi Anthony,
Thank you for commenting!
I am really glad to hear that this post helped. Believe it or not, this is one of the most popular posts on my entire blog! Did you find the link over at stackoverflow.com? That is where most of the traffic for this post comes from.
Congratulations on getting into web design! Any ideas on what you would like to read about in future posts? I’d be happy to hear your ideas!
OK, so If I go to code view where exactly to I paste this code? sorry for such a noob question
Hi Donna,
Thanks for asking, I will try to help you if I can. Are you working in WordPress? or do you have an html file that you are editing?
I doesn’t seem to be working for me. It works when the content container is bigger than the sidebar but not the other way around.
Thank you for commenting! I will try to help you figure out what the problem is.
Is the page that you are working on live? If possible, could you send me a link to the page so that I can look at the codes you are using? You can either post it here or e-mail me at libby@thelibzter.com.
Thanks!
What do you do if the sidebar background is different than the content background?
Hi Tracy, the sidebar and the content in my example do have different background colors. Is that not what you are asking? Please let me know if you have more questions. Thanks!
It was but my question needed a more complex explanation and answer and I figured out how to do it. Thanks for the quick response.
I understand why it’s the most popular blog post! I was searching for a solution and this came up in Google to bring me here. I’m off to read your updated post now – just wanted to say thanks!
